Why our parents don’t trust crypto

هذه الصفحة متوفّرة حاليًا بالإنجليزية والروسية. ستضاف اللغات الأخرى قبل الإطلاق.

Say “crypto” to most parents and watch their face change. It is not ignorance. It is memory.

They remember the headlines about exchanges that disappeared overnight. The neighbour who put his savings in on a friend’s tip. The phone call from someone who knew their name and promised to double everything. For them the word does not mean technology. It means a risk they cannot see.

Then comes the language. Addresses that look like passwords. Seed phrases. Networks with names like codes. Fees that change while you watch. And one rule that nobody explains kindly: make a mistake, and there is no bank to call and no way back.

So they say “don’t get into that crypto”, and honestly, that instinct has protected a lot of savings. Distrusting something irreversible, full of jargon and full of people who want your money is not old-fashioned. It is sensible.

But the same parents now hear that relatives abroad are paid in digital dollars, that some transfers arrive that way, that it is simply how money moves for part of the family. Not an investment. Just money.

Our view is simple. For parents, digital dollars should look like money, not like a trading screen: familiar words, a balance in dollars, no promises of returns, limits, and a trusted helper who checks the network before anything is sent. That is how Moduwi approaches digital assets, and it is why they are marked “coming soon” until they can be offered exactly that way, with an authorised partner.

If your mum or dad has ever told you to stay away from crypto, they were not being old. They were describing exactly what is missing. Send this to them. Or to the sibling who has this argument every holiday.
